The Ho West District Assembly has supported seventy-one (71) Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as part of ongoing efforts to improve livelihoods and promote economic independence among vulnerable groups in the district. The beneficiaries, made up of 36 males and 35 females, received a wide range of income-generating items to help them start or expand their small-scale businesses.
The event, held on Friday, 28th November 2025, took place at the forecourt of the Assembly. Items distributed included 15 Fufu Pounding Machines, 16 Deep Freezers, 12 Cassava Grinding Machines, 2 Spice Grinding Machines, 1 Palm Kernel Cracker, 3 Industrial Sewing Machines, and 200 Plastic Chairs, tailored to the specific needs of the beneficiaries. Others included 5 educational support packages, 1 medical support package, and start-up capital for 14 beneficiaries for various enterprises.
As part of the intervention, beneficiaries also received capacity-building training in entrepreneurship, financial management, and effective utilization of business tools to equip them with the skills and confidence needed to operate sustainable enterprises.
In his address, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Francis Profer Dusey, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to inclusive development and the empowerment of vulnerable citizens in the district. He revealed that, as part of the Reset Agenda, the government is considering increasing the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) allocation for PWDs from 3% to 5%. He noted that once approved, this proposal will significantly broaden the support base for beneficiaries nationwide.
Hon. Dusey urged beneficiaries to take the training seriously, as it will play a key role in enabling them to create sustainable sources of income. He also advised them not to sell the items but put them to productive use to uplift their livelihoods and contribute to the socio-economic growth of the district. He further assured them that the Assembly, through the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, will conduct regular monitoring to ensure that the intervention yields the intended impact.
The Presiding Member, Osman Adamu Kasim, reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to championing inclusive development. He encouraged beneficiaries to recognize their unique abilities, emphasizing that disability does not mean inability. He also called on parents to treat children with disabilities with dignity, care, and equal support.
Representing the Member of Parliament, Mr. Adom Worlasi commended the Assembly for sustaining its support for PWDs. He noted that government interventions become meaningful only when they translate into improved livelihoods and urged beneficiaries to remain focused and determined in their entrepreneurial journey.
The District Social Welfare and Community Development Officer, Mr. Prince Semabia, explained the criteria used in selecting the beneficiaries and added that the support was based strictly on needs assessments conducted across the district. He reaffirmed the department’s commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of PWDs while assuring continuous monitoring and support.
Officials from Weto Rural Bank delivered a brief financial literacy session, emphasizing the importance of savings, proper account management, and cultivating consistent saving habits to sustain and grow their businesses.
The Ho West President of the Ghana Federation of Disability, Mr. Francis Foli expressed appreciation to the Assembly for the timely support and urged beneficiaries to use the items for their intended purpose.
